Liaden Universe® Volume Five Disambiguation Post

As advertised elsewhere, here is the T(able) o(f) C(ontents) for the upcoming A Liaden Universe® Constellation Number 5.  In which “upcoming” = February 2022.

Authors’ Foreword
Fortune’s Favors
Opportunity to Seize
Shout of Honor
Command Decision
Dark Secrets
A Visit to the Galaxy Ballroom
The Gate that Locks the Tree
Preferred Seating
Ambient Conditions
Dead Men Dream

Several people have written in confusion because, though they are faithful consumers of the Pinbeam Chapbooks, they do not seem to have the story here-entitled “Opportunity to Seize.”

The story under the title appeared in the chapbook Fortune’s Favors:  Adventures in the Liaden Universe® No. 28 as the outtake from Neogenesis.  In the chapbook, the outtake is only designated by what had been its chapter heading when it was still part of Neogenesis, and that was!

SUREBLEAK
Dudley Avenue and Farley Street

The reason this was changed was to make it less confusing for all the folks who wrote after Fortune’s Favors was published, wondering what the heck “the last scene” had to do with “the story.”  By changing the story designation, we have of course confused even more people.

NOTE:  I’ve started to list the series, if any, a particular title is part of, as well as its place in series, if known.

*Yes, yes, it’s a sad thing, an author reading her own stuff for fun, but there it is — I recently had to proof Local Custom, the first of the threesome, and found it, err, compelling, and I had the two follows on the phone, so here we are.  For the record, I’m having fun.  The trilogy runs thusly:  Local Custom, Scout’s Progress, Mouse and Dragon.

CORRECTION: From Every Storm a Rainbow

Due to a combination of factors, including Yr Humble Narrator forgetting to write down an amended date at the time it was amended, it comes about that the Liaden Universe® story “From Every Storm a Rainbow” will be the Lead Story on Baen.com for December.  That means it will show up on the front page below the new books on or around December 15, 16, 17.

As discussed in various venues, “. . .Rainbow,” is a Sinit Caylon story.  We last saw Sinit in Mouse and Dragon when she was poised on one end of a Very Large Learning Curve.

If you’ve forgotten Sinit, the December date for the story’s arrival means that you have time to — *evil grin* — re-read Mouse and Dragon.  I did that a couple of months ago and can testify that it’s quite good.

In any case, and repeating for those who came in late — Mark your calendars for real this time!  “From Every Story a Rainbow,” Baen.com, mid-December 2021.

Brief Updatery

*The ebook edition of BREAD ALONE will be available for download from Baen.com “before the parades start” on Thanksgiving Day.

2.  LIADEN “HOLIDAY” STORY ON BAEN.COM

To the best of my ability to calculate, Liaden short story “From Every Storm a Rainbow” will be published to the front page at Baen.com this week.  Possibly today, maybe tomorrow.  Note that you will have to scroll down a bit to get to the story.

3.  WHAT ON EARTH ARE THEY ABOUT?

Steve is working on the sequel to the upcoming Jethri Gobeln novel FAIR TRADE*.

Sharon is working on a novel dealing with the new arrangements at Tinsori Light.

Neither of these projects has titles as yet.

*In which “upcoming” = May 3, 2022.

4.  THE STATE OF SHARON’S DESK

Some of you will recall that I straightened my desk after turning in BREAD ALONE.  This was so I could begin my next project with a tidy desk, which is something that I Do.  In extreme cases, I have to tidy the entire house before I can begin a new project, but this was not an extreme case.

So!  This is what the desk looked like on the evening of November 14:

This is what the desk looks like this morning, November 16:

And here’s a close-up of my user manuals. The one on the bottom worries me a bit.

And, that?  Is all I’ve got.

Everybody stay safe.

BREAD ALONE Availability

The ebook edition of BREAD ALONE: Adventures in the Liaden Universe® Number 34, by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller, is showing up at the various online vendors.  At this writing, you may preoder the ebook for a November 25 delivery from Amazon, Apple, BN, Kobo; BorrowBox, Tolino, and Vivlio.

The ebook edition will be available for download in the format of your choice at Baen.com on November 25.

The paper edition is on-sale NOW at Amazon — that’s all the Amazons, as far as I can tell.  Here’s the US link.

In theory, the paper edition will eventually show up for sale at BN and other stores, but my information here is somewhat sketchy.

For those coming in late, here’s the blurb:

To survive, humans need air, water, a place to stand, a place to sleep, and sustenance. Bread is a good start for sustenance. Don Eyr and Serana were survivors who came to Low Port – it gave them air, water, a place to stand and a place to make bread. The place to sleep meant they needed a certain amount of safety and to get that they founded a bakery at the corner of Crakle and Toom, brought in others seeking to survive in the midst of the poverty and ignorance, and built a tiny bastion of a self-sufficient community dedicated to raising competent, alert children who understood decency.

Low Port toughs tried to break the bakery and a planet-shaking blast from the skies nearly did it in, but the bakery was hope, and people who have hope will fight to keep it.

This chapbook collects four stories about sustenance, all about the bakery, its people, and its influence. ?Degrees of Separation,? ?Fortune’s Favors,? and “Block Party” are reprints. The novelette ?Our Lady of Benevolence? appears here for the first time.

The process of making ebooks and paper books

This is how Pinbeam Books (that’s Sharon Lee and Steve Miller) makes book.

  1.  We collect, or write, or write and collect, the stories to be published.
  2.  We put them into form, compile them, and call for Tyop Hunters.
  3.  At this point, we may or may not put the ebook up for pre-order on Amazon only by promising to upload the completed file by a certain date.
  4. Tyop Hunter results are entered into the ebook file.
  5. The corrected ebook is uploaded to Amazon and All The Usual Suspects, for pre-order or for sale, depending on how long it has taken to complete 4, above.
  6. At this point, we are free to use the clean and corrected ebook file as a base for the paper book edition.  Unlike ebooks, one must be committed to producing a paper book now.  It is not possible to set up a paper book for pre-order by promising to upload the file by a certain date.  It’s all or nothing.  This is why the paper book variously goes on sale before, after, or on the very day that the ebook edition drops.
  7. Once the paper book has been compiled and uploaded, Amazon puts it on sale and sometimes remembers to associate it with the catalog page for the ebook edition.  This is the step where you, the reader, can Actually Purchase the paper edition.

Please refer to this procedure in future, if there are any questions about the availability of a paper edition of a new Pinbeam Books book.

Thank you for your attention.

PUBLISHING NEWS

1 BREAD ALONE: Adventures in the Liaden Universe® Number 34 will be published on November 25, 2021. BREAD ALONE collects all of the so-called “bakery” stories into one volume. The stories included are: “Degrees of Separation,” “Fortune’s Favors,” “Block Party,” and “Our Lady of Benevolence.” The first three stories are reprints – that means they have been published previously – “Our Lady . . . ” is original to this chapbook. At the time this InfoDump was put to bed, preorders were available from Amazon. The other vendors will eventually have the book in stock, but for right now, you may PREorder from Amazon ONLY. Here’s your link.

2 The Baen reissue of LOCAL CUSTOM will go on sale as an ebook and mass market paperback on November 30, 2021. You may read sample chapters here.  Art by Sam R. Kennedy

3 A LIADEN UNIVERSE® CONSTELLATION, VOLUME 5 is now available from Baen.com as an eARC. You can either purchase the eARC or read a sample (or, yanno, do both) at this link.
3a You will be able to buy the ebook/paper edition on February 1, 2022 from all of the Usual Suspects. Cover art by Sam R. Kennedy

4 Liaden Universe® novel FAIR TRADE, the third featuring Jethri Gobelyn, a Terran apprenticed to a Liaden master trader, will be published by Baen on May 3, 2022. Cover art by David B. Mattingly. The hardcover may be preordered at your favorite bookstore; the ebook may not. There will be an ebook, but because of Baen’s tradition of providing an eARC before actual publication, the ebook cannot be preordered (we are repeating what we’re told here – further questions may be addressed to Baen at the email address on the site). We do not yet have a date for the appearance of the eARC nor any news on an audiobook – watch the skies.

5 Liaden Universe® short story “Gadreel’s Folly” will be included in the anthology, GIRLS IN TANK TOPS, edited by Jason Cordova. Projected publication date is late 2022, from Baen. Contributors include Lee and Miller, Esther Friesner, David Drake, Kevin Ikenberry, Robert E. Hampson, Joelle Presby, Marisa Wolf, Lydia Sherrer, G. Scott Huggins, and a few others. Editor Jason Cordova says: “It’s a great mixture of humor and action, with a few turning a little dark. The authors have turned in everything from SF to alternate history to fantasy. It’s a great blend of genres with one unifying theme: a girl and her tank.”
