Endicott puts the kids to bed, Endicott reads a book to them

This is a longish post mostly about (my) health, which I concede is a fairly boring topic.  There is, however, something of Actual Interest starting about half-way down.  Your search-phrase is Speaking of wicked.

So, just about caught up with housekeeping, bill-paying, and laundry.  The cats are being a little clingy still, despite having had Mary’s undivided attention.  Next time we go on tour, I guess we’ll just have to bring them along.

Or not.

Frequent auditors of this blog will recall that, right before we went on tour, I had a visit with the vampires.  The panel of tests came back with good results, except that pituitary function was up, which was considered a sign that it was pushing the thyroid to work harder, which meant that (maybe) the dosage of my meds needed to be increased.  The bitter irony here being that, though I had been pulling the falling-asleep-between-sentences thing throughout the writing of Alliance of Equals, I didn’t even mention it during the annual examination immediately prior to the blood test, because it seemed pointless.  Not that my doctor doesn’t listen to me, but she listens to the test results harder, and we’ve been down that road too many times.

Happily, this time the test results took up the slack.

Long story short, we’re three weeks into the slightly higher dose of meds, with a book tour taking up a week of that (maybe not the best timing, there), and I’m noticing a definite decrease in the fall-asleep-snap-awake thing (which is actually A Rather Unpleasant Sensation, not to mention the hash it makes of productivity, and the potential for producing Real Mayhem, should I fall asleep while driving), so, hoping the six-week blood test will be such that I’m allowed to keep the higher dosage.

But!  This little skit demonstrates a flaw in my otherwise perfectly agreeable personality (ahem), which I’m going to have to address.

I’m going to go out on a limb, here, and make the crazy assumption that health professionals are going to be playing a larger role in my life as I meander down my timeline.  Health professionals being human, they come with their own set of assumptions and experiences, particularly with regard to grey-haired women.  That’s fine, but here’s the thing.  I get bored.  Particularly, I get bored when I have stated a fact regarding my health which the tests then fail to support — or don’t support definitively.  After the third time, I figure there’s no point to repeating myself, and I stop, even if I feel that there’s still a problem.

Clearly, I’m going to have to Get Tough about repeating myself and pushing for solutions.

I’m also going to have to get back with doing yoga, which got kicked off-track after PhilCon, and, with one thing and another, never got back into the schedule.

Boy, that’s a lot of virtue in my future.  I’ll have to adopt a wicked new hobby somewhere along the way, so as not to become unbalanced.

Speaking of wicked — While we were on-tour, we received a head’s up from Bookseller Kate Reynolds that A Night in the Lonesome October (written by Roger Zelazny; illustrated by Gahan Wilson) has been reprinted in trade paper by the Chicago Review Press, in their Rediscovered Classics line (which seems to also include Mary Stewart’s Entire Ouvre; as well as Gwen Bistrow, Anya Seton, Rosemary Sutcliff, and, like, a dozen other authors/books I read in my now far-distant youth.  BN will give you a list of the titles in the Rediscovered Classics line; Amazon is not so courteous).

For those who may be new reading here, A Night in the Lonesome October is. . .it’s an advent calendar for Halloween.  Each of the chapters is dated, starting on September 30, and it is meant to be read one chapter a night, through Halloween.  Steve and I read it to each other every year, and our copy is starting to show the results of our dedication, so we’re happy to be able to purchase a back-up copy.

And that?  Is all I’ve got.

No, wait; it’s not.

I also have a picture of Trooper:

Revealed! Pub date for Alliance of Equals

Only moments ago, we received the following, direct from the pen of Madame the Editor:

While I am still savoring the manuscript—we have penciled in a date of July 2016 for publication of ALLIANCE, with the mass market pb of DRAGON IN EXILE for June. The month is still somewhat fluid, but Summer Season 2016 is definite for both.

In which the glamorous life of an author is…yeah

So!  This morning, I pulled some — most, actually — of the weeds under the deck, and threw some of the pine shavings that the snow had pushed down to, under, and around the propane tank up where they belong.  Tomorrow will see more of the same, since the Deal is that I will do this for no more than 15 minutes at a time, so as not to Thoroughly Bork my hands.

Also this morning, I paid bills, and wrote the checks for the quarterly taxes, which was…enlightening, and did the accounting for Patreon and Paypal, including writing checks for the taxes on same.

In a few minutes, I’ll set about starting to get Shan and Priscilla Ride Again, Chapter 8, in shape to be seen on the web.

Around all that is the on-going doing of the laundry, which is being shared out between us, using the Proximity Method.  Trooper has declared a Vendetta of Honor with the adding machine, which has offendeth him by monopolizing my time.  The adding machine seems pretty cool with this, so maybe it’s just a Formal Thing, and doesn’t actually involve any Duels to the Pain.

I really should vacuum — maybe tomorrow — and do the dishes — ditto.  Surely, we haven’t been home long enough to have generated dirty dishes.  I again suspect the cats of having friends in while we’re asleep.

In other news, four romance books arrived at the Cat Farm while we were gone, from far-flung vendors of used volumes.  Perhaps after I’ve finished with Shan and Priscilla, I’ll retire to the couch and finish up with The Martian, so I can clean my palate with a romance.

Just a reminder, since this was a frequent question on the tour:  To the best of our knowledge, Alliance of Equals has not yet been scheduled for publication.  Authors don’t schedule books, publishers schedule books.  At some point, someone from the publisher will inform us of the publication date, and then we’ll let y’all know.

The next Liaden Universe® novel (aka Third of Five), which at the moment labors under the working title, The Gathering Edge, is due on Madame the Publisher’s desk on February 15, 2016, rescheduled from November 15, 2015.  As of this writing, its publication date is a Mystery.

We do know the publication date of Liaden Universe® Constellation, Volume 3 — August 4, 2015 (hey, that’s only 7 weeks from now!).  And! if you want a signed and/or personalized copy of that volume, you need to act fast and pre-order from Uncle Hugo’s.  Here’s your link to the pre-order page, instructions, and! the table of contents.

. . .I think that’s all I got.  Being home continues to be a Very Good Thing.

Even with having to do the laundry.

Home are the writers, home from the tour…

Oh, let’s see, where was I?

Milford, New Hampshire, I think.  Yes — we had a great time talking with the science fiction readers group at Toadstool Books’ Milford location on Thursday.

On Friday, our intrepid and very patient driver conveyed us to Annie’s Book Stop in Worcester, where we talked with a SRO crowd of avid Liaden readers, some of whom had traveled from the far kingdoms of Connecticut and Boston and New York state.  We had a great time, and returned to the hotel tired, but happy.

Saturday, we shifted residence again, to our old standby, the Fairfield Inn, in East Greenbush.  From there, we visited Northshire Books in Saratoga Springs, where I could have happily spent the day, but duty called.  We spoke to a small crowd of familiar faces, and I got to talk about The Telling Detail in public, which is always a pleasure, and so back to base and a late dinner at, yes, Denny’s.  (Fish.  And salad.  Honest, for those who fear for our longevity when we dine out: We’ve made it this far, after all.)

Sunday afternoon, we had a pleasant lunch at Maria Perry’s house with the Flights of Fantasy book club, before removing to the store, where an amazing number of people waited for us, considering that it was a Truly Gorgeous day.

We were very lax on the photographic side this time — if anyone has pictures from any of our events, we’d love to see them!  Kate Reynolds took this picture of us getting ready to read from Dragon in Exile.

Everybody seemed to have fun — we did!  Many books were signed, and eventually we wended our way back to base, said a fond farewell to our noble driver, and retired to Denny’s for dinner (Chicken Bourbon — we split what Denny’s fondly believes to be one serving.  We did sin slightly by taking a slice of cheesecake (one, which we split) back to the room for a late dessert).  Returning to the room, we packed, I read, Steve perused Facebook, and so early to bed, in anticipation of Monday’s adventure.

Yesterday. . .was Monday.  Enterprise Rent-a-Car responded nobly to our 7:30 a.m. call, and sent Billy to pick us and our luggage up and take us to the East Greenbush location in order to fill out paperwork and take charge of the keys to a sleek black Jeep Compass, which we proceeded to drive north to Brunswick.  We reclaimed Kineo from Amtrak long-term parking, turned the Jeep back to the Enterprise location on Pleasant Street and beat feet to the Cat Farm and Confusion Factory, with a short stop at the Waterville Hannaford to pick up a few groceries.

Trooper and Scrabble were on paw to greet us upon arrival.  Sprite left her Ivory Tower as we were putting the groceries away, and. . . we shall, gentle reader, draw a curtain over the intimacies of the joyous homecoming.

This morning was about sleeping late, and getting the receipts in order to send on to the publisher, and skritching cats.  Steve has been a ball o’fire, and has already started the laundry.  This afternoon after lunch (salad!), and possibly a nap, will be about paying the bills that arrived while we were gone, and balancing checkbooks, brushing cats (all of whom swear that Mary did not brush them; or anyway, she did, but not The Right Way) and perhaps peering cautiously at the 200+/- legitimate emails that are waiting for my attention.  Or maybe I’ll take up a corner of the sofa and read The Martian, which I’m finding Very Slow, but not quite irritating enough to give up on.  Honestly, though; if the hero of this novel had been a woman?  It would have been dismissed as a Mary Sue of the Highest Order.  Also — cardboard characters, much?

. . .I think that catches me up.

So!  What’ve y’all been doing for the last week?

If it’s Thursday, it must be Milford

As predicted in a previous Thrilling Episode, Steve and I boarded the Downeaster at Brunswick, Maine, at a ridiculously early hour.  We settled in, to watch the rain through the windows and eat our carry-on sandwiches and nap a little.  The train was an hour late, because of on going track work, and we arrived at North Station a little before 11:00, where we were met by our intrepid drive, and whisked off to our hotel.

We got settled in, went out in to the rain in search of lunch, had a nap, and in due time met our driver once again and headed out to Cambridge, and Pandemonium Books for the big Dragon in Exile Release Day Party.

There was NO ONE driving in Boston to hinder our progress and we arrived in good time to have a nice chat with Tyler and John, and to admire the spaceships on the ceiling, and to chat with people as they came in.  We had a good crowd, including many, many familiar faces.  Tyler set out a lovely wine-and-cheese-and-fruit spread, and we all had a good time talking about all kinds of interesting stuff, including the Liaden Universe®, our writing process, and, of course, cats.

Yesterday, we traveled to Toadstool Books in Keene, NH, where we met with the writing group. We had a lively and intense discussion, and had a special visitation from an Original Green Liaden Universe® t-shirt.

Tonight!  We’ll be at Toadstool Books in Milford, NH at 6:30.  Come by and see us if you’re in the area!

Fans of the Office Staff will be pleased to learn that Trooper and Scrabble are on the case, and helping the housesitter keep the Cat Farm secure until our return.  Princess Sprite has retired her aerie, where, one speculates, she is working on her memoirs.

Getting ready to leave town

So, last night, Steve and I turned Alliance of Equals, the 19th novel in the Liaden Universe®, in to Madame the Editor at Baen.

This morning, we posted the seventh chapter of Shan and Priscilla Ride Again.  Here’s your link.

Tomorrow, we’re getting on the Downeaster at Oh Ghod O’Clock, heading for Boston and the first stop on the Lightning Northeast Book Tour in Support of Dragon in Exile.

Today, we still need to do an InfoDump, pack, hand off the keys to the house-sitter — and I need to clean off my desk.

Why do I need to clean off my desk, you ask?

This is why:

Creativity is messy
Creativity is messy

Also?  the milk crate in the bottom right of the picture is full of Alliance-related papers, too.

So!  What’re you doing today that’s fun?

EDITED TO ADD:

OK; that's better
