Fourth Questions Answered

So!  After a short break to get some work done, and do promotion — we have arrived at a pair of Fourth Questions.  To wit!

Question Four Number One

There is a recollection that Lee and Miller once upon a time wrote one (or more) books under an NDA where they can not indicate which book(s) they wrote, presumably as they were ghost writing (or for a house name). If the NDA has timed out, wonder if you could let us know which book(s) you folk wrote. If not, you are, of course, welcome to toss this question into the bit bin.

No, we narrowly escaped from a NDA situation in which the folks wanting our services were, um. . .a little feral in their understanding of what a NDA was and how much of our lives and creativity they got to own after we signed on the dotted line.  We kind of wrote a story about that.  Coming soon.

What we DID do is sign on to do a couple of works-for-hire.  One was for a gaming company, way, waaaaaay back in time, right after we’d moved to Maine.  The other was Sword of Orion:  Book One of Beneath Strange Skies, published by Phobos Impact.  People occasionally write to us, wanting to know when the next in that series will be published, or asking us to make the existing volume available as an ebook, and the answer is!

It’s not our book.  Those few who own this volume will note, not only the authors’ dedication to Victor Appleton, but that the book is copyright 2005 by Phobos Books LLC.  That means we don’t own the story, or the characters.  Certainly, we can’t undertake to write the sequel of a book someone else owns.

So, there’s that.

Question Four Number two

Now that Baen has your manuscript, approximately how long before an e-arc will become available…  Not every author that I enjoy releases an e-arc of their works and I really appreciate your willingness to support my addiction to your universes… Additionally, do you get more from the entrance fee for an e-arc than for the final electronic product since the final product it’s usually discounted?

The timing of eArcs has been amply discussed elsewhere.  Short form:  eArcs, their appearance, or non-appearance, in fact, their very existence — falls within Baen’s honor.  Authors do not make eArcs available.  The publisher makes eArcs available according to their own customs, of which we wot, if not precisely not, at least very little.

Authors are paid a percentage of cover price. This percentage is set down in the contract.  I think we get fifty percent of cover for the eArc, and something in that range for the finished ebook (see author being too lazy to get up from her desk to walk into the tech room, wrestle with the file cabinet and pull the contracts).  Percentages for hardcover and mass market sales are less, but the theory is you make it up in volume.

Here endeth the answers to Questions the Fourth.

What YOU Can Do to Boost the Luck

All righty, then!

Now that the paper editions of Fortune’s Favors are landing, I’m going to do that Author Thing where I ask those who have (already!) read the book to please review it. Amazon will now accept reviews, and, assuming some kind person has made a page for it, so will Goodreads and LibraryThing. Or, if you have a blog where you talk about books — you know the drill.

Amazon’s early release of the paper edition is an Opportunity to really get the word out about the new book, and influence people who are on the fence to take a chance.

So! If you can, please do boost the signal for Fortune’s Favors: Adventures in the Liaden Universe(R) Number 28, by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller.

Thanks!

It was to the gayn’Urlez Hell in lower Low Port that his feet finally brought him, over the objections of most of himself.

There were those who dismissed Low Port as a miserable pit of vicious humanity where lived predators and prey; the roles subject to reversal without notice.

Those contended that there was nothing of value in Low Port; that it was worth the life of any honorable person to even attempt to walk such streets.

They. . .were not wrong, those who lived in the comfort of Mid Port and the luxury of High; and who bothered to give Low Port half a thought down the course of a Standard Year.

They were not wrong.

But they lacked discrimination.

It was true that there were very many bad and dangerous streets inside the uneasy boundaries of Low Port, and then –

There were worse.

The gayn’Urlez Gaming Hell occupied the corner of two such thoroughfares, and the best that could be said of them is that they were. . .somewhat less unsafe than the Hell itself.

Mar Tyn eys’Ornstahl had made it a policy – insofar as he was able to make policy – not to enter gayn’Urlez, much less work there.

Today, his feet had trampled policy, and Mar Tyn only hoped that he would survive the experience.

So anxious was he for that outcome, in fact, that he took the extreme action of. . .arguing. . .with his feet.

On the very corner, directly across from the most dangerous Hell in Low Port, Mar Tyn – turned to the right.

His feet hesitated, then strode out promptly enough, even turning right at the next corner, with no prompting from him, toward the somewhat safer streets where he was at least known.

Another might have assumed victory, just there, but Mar Tyn had lived with his feet for many years. It thus came as no surprise when they failed to take his direction at the next corner, bearing left, rather than right, until they stopped once more across the street from Hell.

He sighed. That was how it was going to be, was it?

Best to get on with it, then.

The barkeep was a thick woman with cropped grey hair and a prosthetic eye. She gave him a glance as he approached and leaned her elbows on the bar.

“Got reg’lars on tonight,” she told him, pleasant enough. “Two days down there’s a bed open, if you want to reserve in advance. Reservation includes a drink tonight and a hour to study the layout. The House takes six.”

Mar Tyn smiled at her over the bar.

“I’m not a pleasure-worker,” he said, gently.

She frowned.

“What are you, then?”

“A Luck.”

Preodering Fortune’s Favors

So, I spent yesterday fixing, tweaking, formatting, and reformatting files, then uploading them to various booksellers and distributors.  The result of all this labor is that Fortune’s Favors: Adventures in the Liaden Universe® Number 28, will be available in ebook form on April 15 from the following vendors:

Amazon, Angus & Robertson, Apple, Baen, Baker & Taylor, BN, Bibliotheca, Google, Kobo, Overdrive, Playster, Scribd, Tolino, 24Symbols

There will be a paperback edition available from Amazon only*.  It may be that the paper book will also at some point be available for pre-order, or it may simply appear as ready to order whenever the Amazon Vetting Process is complete.  Amazon is not perfectly clear on this point.

If you want to preorder the ebook edition of Fortune’s Favors, the following vendors are alleged to be standing by for you:

Angus & Robertson:  here’s your link

Apple:  here’s your link

BN/Nook:  here’s your link

Kobo:  here’s your link

*Yes, I know BN offers the option of making a paper book through them, but they do not offer an easy option, and I should’ve started back with the book due in September two weeks ago, so I have no time to bother with fiddly and opaque online publishing programs.

Fortune’s Favors Update!

All righty, then! In Beautiful Theory, Fortune’s Favors: Adventures in the Liaden Universe(R) Number 28 will go on sale at Baen, B&N, Kobo, Amazon, the IThing Store, Google Play, and a buncha teensy tiny venues on April 15.

However!

It may go on sale before April 15 in some venues — doncha love that element of uncertainty, there? Puts you right up on your toes, is what I’m sayin’.

I trust y’all know what to do.

Right.

Watch the Skies.

Watch the skies

Fortune’s Favors:
Adventures in the Liaden Universe® Number 28

Is in the proofing and recompiling stage.  We hope to see it for sale, as an ebook and (from Amazon only) a paper book on-or-near April 15.  We will tell you when it can be ordered, or you can, as above, watch the skies.

Herewith, the cover and the teaser.

Are you feeling lucky?

Mar Tyn eys’Ornstahl is a lucky man. His very presence can determine the fall of a card, the spin of a wheel, or whether the bread will rise or fall.

In fact, Mar Tyn eys’Ornstahl isn’t merely lucky. Mar Tyn is a Luck; a focal point for the elemental force of random event. While most people think that there is good luck and bad, Mar Tyn knows better. Luck is Luck; only the aftermath of Luck’s presence can be found to be good or bad.

Mar Tyn’s Luck, for instance, has recently cost him his home, and his savings. He has only one thing left to gamble.

And his life might not be enough.

NEVER BEFORE IN PRINT!

Your mama don’t dance and your daddy don’t rock ‘n roll

This morning!  I get to hang around in my bathrobe for a bit, as a reward for having (finally, finally) finished the first draft of the untitled story, henceforth to be known to the world as “Fortune’s Favors.”  The story introduces some new characters, and looks in on some folks we’ve seen before.  I think you’ll like it.

This brand-new story, with an outtake from Neogenesis and …Lance (that’s the same outtake that didn’t ultimately fit in either book, and the story has flowed past it), and an Author’s Foreword (or, yanno, Backword) will appear in the chapbook:  Fortune’s Favors:  Adventures in the Liaden Universe® Number 28.

What Happens Now, since Steve read the story hot off the printer last night, and noted a couple of things to be tweaked, is:

*Go over the story, line by line, tweaking tweaks, and adding in That Thing that got dropped in the heat of the moment

*Go over the outtake, line by line

*Write the Authors’ Note, pass it to Steve for edits, go over it line by line

*Build a cover

*Compile the entire book and get it up for sale with the Usual Suspects

So, depending on Real Life, you — yes, you! — may be able to purchase the first new Adventures in the Liaden Universe® chapbook in over a year, by mid-April.  Rest assured, we’ll tell you when it’s available.

Moving on to the rest of the to-do list, I have a couple of phone calls to make, including one to the dentist, which I’ve been putting off for mumble, and really shouldn’t put off anymore.  Also today, I need to hit the gym, because today is not the day to skip the gym.  When I get back, and after phone calls, I’ll draft the Authors’ Note, and maybe start shopping for a cover.

See you on the flipside.
