Liaden Universe® InfoDump Number 125

Liaden Universe® InfoDump No. 125

Ten Things Make an InfoDump
Thing One:  Splinter Universe Presents!
Splinter Universe is undergoing housecleaning and a slight revamp, with a biggish new project in mind.  This meant removing material that has been on the site since the early 2000s.  Fans of the site were concerned that the content would be “lost forever,” so, instead, it’s been collected into this large — 200+ page — volume:  Splinter Universe Presents!
The book includes bits of novels or stories that stalled; outtakes from published novels; character sketches; and discovery drafts. Everything is Liaden in nature, but none of the collected pieces are complete. They are of possible interest to devoted fans of the Liaden Universe®; they are not guaranteed to be everyone’s cuppa. Every one of these bits has been previously published on Splinter Universe, for the amusement of the authors and the interest of those same devoted fans. There is nothing new, save the Authors’ Introduction.
Here are some sell links:
Thing Two:  Speaking of Splinter Universe
Several new splinters have been added to the site including an outtake from Alliance of Equals, an early vision of what Daav yos’Phelium did while he was separated from his clan, a glimpse of Shan as he prepares for his first contract marriage, and a fun little piece of weirdness featuring a Zork.
Go here to share in the fun!
And watch the skies for news of that new project mentioned above.
Thing Three:  Sharon Lee reads The Vestals of Midnight
This is Sharon reading her short Archers Beach story “The Vestals of Midnight,” available to the public for the first time!  Here’s your link:  https://www.patreon.com/posts/34148316
Thing Four:  Barnburner and Gunshy Audiobooks
Sharon Lee has contracted with Tantor Audiobooks to produce her cozy Maine mysteries, Barnburner and Gunshy as audiobooks.  Narrator is Traci Odom.  Watch the skies for news of availability.
If you haven’t read Sharon’s cozies, they are available in ebook format from All the Usual Suspects.  Below are links to Baen’s catalog pages, and previews.
Thing Five:  Pinbeam Books
Pinbeam Books is Lee and Miller’s indie publishing arm.  It is the publisher of the Adventures in the Liaden Universe®  series, the most recent titles there being The Gate that Locks the Tree, Shout of Honor, and Fortune’s Favors.  Pinbeam is also the publisher of various of Steve Miller and Sharon Lee’s separate and non-Liaden work, as well as the newly released Splinter Universe Presents!
Here’s the link to the Pinbeam Books catalog.
Thing Six: Upcoming Liaden Books from Baen
The mass market edition of Accepting the Lance will be published on October 27. Lance came out in December 2019 in hardcover, ebook, and audio editions.  Here’s your link.

The SEQUEL to Accepting the Lance (yes, the SEQUEL), Trader’s Leap, will be published on December 1, and is now available for pre-order from Amazon. Here’s your link.Steve is working on Night of Masks, the sequel to Trade Secret.  The work on this is going slower than we would like, for Reasons explained under Thing Nine, below; as a result, we do not have a publication date at this time.

Thing Seven:  New Short Story at Baen.com
In mid-November, brand-new Liaden story “Preferred Seating” will be published, free! on Baen.com.

Thing Eight:  Lee and Miller GOH
Assuming Circumstances allow — Sharon and Steve will be Writer Guests of Honor at AlbaCon, September 11-13, 2020, in Albany, New York.

Thing Nine:  Boring Health Stuff, Author Edition
Those who have been following Sharon’s blog will recall that she had a mastectomy in mid-March. She has healed well from that surgery, but now there are other therapies being explored to finish the job.  As things stand now, she will be undergoing radiation, and may be (we’re waiting for test results as this newsletter is being written) slotted in for chemotherapy.

Thing Ten: Baen UNtravelling Roadshow
Join us right here at https://www.facebook.com/BaenBooks at 4 PM, 4/18 for a presentation featuring David Weber, Eric Flint, Catherine Asaro, Wil McCarthy, Robert E. Hampson, Robert Buettner, Charles E. Gannon, Griffin Barber, Sharon Lee, Steve Miller and the Baen Editorial team. Learn about our new books…and have your chance to WIN free EBOOKS.

Whole New World, Part Seven

So, we talked to the radiologist, who recommends going straight to radiation and zapping those lymph nodes into the next universe.

So, that’s The Plan, pending the results of the oncotyping, which I should have on the 21st.  If the oncotype is high, then chemo takes precedence.  If the oncotype is low, then I will be given aromatase inhibitors and can start radiation therapy in May, 5 days a week for 5 weeks.

I am — not in a good place about this, even though I know it has to be done.

I also note that we’re still in Hurry Up and Wait Mode.

And that’s All The News.

Splinter Universe Presents! Amazon editions may be delayed

An addendum to this post regarding the publication of Splinter Universe Presents!

Amazon has written to say the content of Splinter Universe Presents! is freely available on the web (which it is not), and that I must Prove I haven’t stolen it. I have replied. However, this may put Amazon publication back. We will publish on schedule with the other ebook vendors, including Baen, BN, Kobo, Apple &c.

Paper edition fanciers — I cannot tell you when — or if — a paper edition will become available.  Watch this space.

The authors and Pinbeam Books are very sorry for this snafu.

Splinter Universe Presents Publishing Thursday!

Here’s what you need to know.

Splinter Universe Presents! a collection of outtakes, thought experiments, and partial (some very partial) stories and novels, will be published as an ebook from Baen.com, Amazon, BN, Kobo, Apple, and all the rest of the Usual Suspects on Thursday, April 16.  A paper edition of this book will be available through Amazon only.

Please note that, while the ebook price of $4.25 has not changed, the price of the paper edition is $10 — $2 over our usual paper edition price of $8.  This is because Splinter Universe Presents! is a big book, by Pinbeam Books standards — 230+/- pages, and because paper costs more than electrons.

Here is the sell copy:

Splinter Universe Presents!
Something a little bit different
What this collection is–it’s Something A Little Bit Different. We will explain. We’ll try to be brief.  And we’ll start with what it isn’t.
It isn’t a Liaden Universe® novel
It isn’t a collection of Liaden short stories
It isn’t an Adventure in the Liaden Universe®

So what is it, you ask.

Well, it’s this:  bits of novels or stories that stalled; outtakes from published novels; character sketches; and discovery drafts. All of these bits and bobs are Liaden in nature, but they are not–not one of them is–complete. They are of possible interest to devoted fans of the Liaden Universe®; they are not guaranteed to be everyone’s cuppa.

Also? Every single one of the said bits and bobs included in this collection has been previously published on Splinter Universe, for the amusement of the authors and the interest of those same devoted fans. There is nothing new here, save the Authors’ Introduction.

All of the material in this book has been removed from Splinter Universe; the only place you will find them is in this collection.  Why?  Because we promised those devoted readers that the material would not be Lost Forever.

Having read this, If you’ve decided to continue–we welcome you, along with those devoted fans who traveled with us down the years.

Have fun.

Clearly, we are doing our damnedest to not sell this book.  We don’t want to mislead anyone, we don’t want angry reviews — or emails — about how The Authors Lied. We want everyone to be very clear about what this is.

This publication is kind of a test for whether we will be putting up the Big New Splinter, or if we Had Better Not. We’re kind of divided here, among ourselves — well, among Steve and me; the cats don’t care, frankly. We do know that writers see fiction differently than readers, and we don’t want to set up a False Canon, so to speak. But there’s some Good Stuff in this Splinter — Splinter though it is — and we’re all bored, and it could be amusing.

So, there’s that.
