Where the books are

Most of the books, all of the movies, and all of the music that were in the living room have now been shifted to my office.  There are a couple smallish piles of books in the bedroom.

Anyhow, here’s what it looks like, when it’s all (mostly) in one big pile:

The Books, the Bear, and the Unicorn

I’ve got errands in town today.  See y’all later.

Tech Help: Paladin Slowly Losing Mind

Update: I went to the BN site and found out that a software update was delivered while I wasn’t paying attention. I’ve just finished downloading and installing it, and!

Paladin now knows what time it is.

Thanks to everyone who offered insight and advice.

So, I bought my little black-and-white Nook, hight Paladin, along in about February. I like it very much and it was a real lifesaver on the summer travels.

Somewhere on the trip, it developed an. . .interesting feature. Its timekeeping got screwed up. By interesting here, I mean — it’s not just off by five minutes; or thinks I’m living in another time zone, or anything like that. It’s slowly gaining time. Right now, at what the atomic clock makes to be 9:41 a.m., Paladin swears that it’s 10:04.

That’s right, I have a digital clock that’s gaining time. I’ve tried reasserting my connection to and loyalty for the Eastern Time Zone, but this has not fixed the problem, and there’s no way to actually set the time, that I can find.

So, that’s the least annoying glitch, but, given the next, may be indicative of a larger problem.

Last night, I opened up Paladin to start a new book, and foolishly hit the “reading now” icon. And instead of taking me to the new book I wanted to open (which I knew it wouldn’t do the instant after I had pressed the icon), or to either of the two other books that I have been sporadically perusing, it opened a book that I had finished weeks ago, while we were on the train. And! It opened that book, not to the end (sometimes I don’t “finish reading” because I forget to page through to the end of the book after I’ve hit the end of the story), but to the middle.

So now I’m worried. Is Paladin in truth losing his mind? Is there anything I can do to bring him back up to line? Am I worrying unnecessarily and this is just a case of the device achieving “personality”?

Thanks in advance.

At the magical hour when is becomes if

All of the books that used to be in the living room? Are now in my office and in the bedroom.  Tomorrow, I’ll shift the CDs. . .somewhere, and maybe take down the pictures, of which there are. . .a lot, and stand them safely against a wall. . .somewhere.

Thus! do we prepare for the painters!

The real zoo is going to be clearing out the kitchen.  Which I’m not thinking about too much, yet, because I need to do this thing and not hide under the bed.

In between shifting books, I baked bread, and tried to sort out MetLife customer service.  Let’s just say that the bread turned out excellently well.

What with all this moving things around, I fear the cats are beginning to Suspect Something.  I explained to Mozart that Nicky had roofers and the windows replaced at the same time!, and that painters are relatively benign.  He takes leave to doubt.

Just wait ’til the guys with the chainsaws arrive to take down the deck.

For those keeping track of deliveries here at the Cat Farm, Laura Anne Gilman’s The Shattered Vine arrived today, from BN.  Still on an approach path, the silicone pastry mat which will make bread-kneading easier.

Short day

Made carrot-and-onion soup for lunch, moved some more books from the living back to my office.  Going to go do dishes, then call it a day, because my hands hurt.  I visualize the couch, a coon cat, and a good book.

Yeah.  I think I can handle that.

PSA: Carousels and Story Ideas

We’re very close to the one-year anniversary of the release of Carousel Tides.  And, over the last week, I’ve received several nice notes asking is there/when will there be a sequel to Carousel Tides.  The answer to that question is, no/I don’t know.

I did submit proposals for two additional books, and the reply from Baen was, reasonably enough:  Let’s wait to see how Carousel Tides does.

So, we’re waiting.  Royalty statements are due at the end of the month — the first royalty statement in which Carousel Tides will make an appearance — and we may all be better informed RSN.

Once again, please, please, please, I beg of you — do not send us story ideas, novel wish lists or requests that the plotlines go in a certain direction.  Just. . .please don’t.

If you cannot restrain yourself, and send such a thing?  Please don’t expect any sort of response, because as soon as I realize what the content is, I delete the message.

Here ends the PSAs.  We now return you to your regulary-scheduled blog, already in progress.

They sell us every thing from youth to religion

We’d been talking, oh, early last week, about the Mississippi “Personhood” Amendment, and, tangentially, what the “discussion” about abortion is really about.  Here’s an interesting (and scary) answer to that.  And, I have to admit that I didn’t realize that my right to privacy was something that had been granted to me during my lifetime.

Today, here at the Cat Farm, was about moving books, and writing an InfoDump, and moving books, and eating dinner, and moving  books, and writing, and moving some more books.  I’m about ready to mix it up now, and do me some dishes.

Sharon Lee and Steve Miller
P.O. Box 1586
Waterville ME  04903-1586

REMINDER:  SRM Publisher Closing
As reported in the previous InfoDump, SRM Publisher is in the process of shutting down.  The retail webpage is no longer accepting orders, and we are working to liquidate the remaining stock with an eye to having the business closed by the end of this year.

Those looking for chapbooks may query Mr. Blyly at Uncle Hugo’s SF Bookstore or Ms. LeBlanc at The Missing Volume.

We are in the process of transferring much of SRM’s stock to another vendor.  When that process is complete, we will provide details.

Back in print:  The Jen Pierce Maine Mysteries
Sharon has made Barnburner and Gunshy, long out of print, available once again in trade paperback, through Lulu.  The books may be ordered from this page.

For those interested in electronic editions of these same novels, they remain on offer at Fictionwise, here.

Coming Up from Lee and Miller
Remember that the mass market edition of Liaden Universe® novel Mouse and Dragon will be released on October 25 (that’s Tuesday!).  Mouse and Dragon is the sequel to Scout’s Progress, continuing the story of Aelliana Caylon and Daav yos’Phelium.

In case you missed it, the hardcover edition is still available from the Bookseller of Your Choice, and, as always, the electronic edition is available right now! in your favorite format (including Nook, Kindle, and a host of others) from Baen Books.

Also!  The mass market edition of Sharon’s contemporary Maine fantasy Carousel Tides is scheduled for January, 2012.  Or, if you can’t wait, the trade paperback edition is available from Your Favorite Bookseller, and, yep, the electronic edition is available for instant gratification, from Baen Books.

Miss Out on Ghost Ship Signed Copies?
Mr. Blyly has on hand a very few signed copies of the hardcover Ghost Ship.

Distant Early Warning:  Don Blyly intends to work with Baen on a similar project once Dragon Ship’s schedule is finalized — please wait to contact him about Dragon Ship.

Splinter Universe
