UR SID TO JOIN LEE-MILLER ARCHIVE AT TEXAS A&M
Longtime FoL will recall Ur Sid, an eight-inch tall Teddy bear, dressed in a Scout uniform. Ur Sid attended the conventions that Steve and Sharon couldn’t make, hobnobbing with the Famous, and, like every good fan, collecting buttons and memorabilia.

The authors would occasionally meet Ur Sid at worldcons, and were always happy to see him. But his purpose was to be an Ambassador at Large for the Liaden Universe®, and in that he succeeded very well, indeed.

Ur Sid traveled between cons via the Bumpy Passage, a refurbed Scout ship that had seen better days, and he sent reports back to the Friends of Liad listserve.

Those reports are sadly lost. However, Ur Sid also kept a diary. From it, we learn that his first WorldCon was ChiCon 2000. His last con, though it’s not noted in the diary, was Heliophere 2023, where Steve and Sharon were Writer Guests of Honor. He attended the Teddy Bear Tea, and charmed the room, as always.

All good adventures do finally come to an end. Ur Sid stopped traveling when the Bumpy Passage suffered a catastrophic failure of its Struven Unit. Subsequently, he spent some years with Friend of Liad Sarge, who reunited him with the authors at PhilCon 78, in 2014.

Ur Sid is about to embark on his last trip, via FedEx. He will be escorting a shipment of Liaden Universe® books to the Lee and Miller Archive at the Cushing Memorial Library at Texas A&M. Once that duty is accomplished, Ur Sid will become part of the permanent archive. He’ll be keeping a Very Close Eye on Steve and Sharon’s Literary Legacy. And charming the curators, of course.

DOORS INTO CHANGE

Door Into Change: Fantastic Stories from Archers Beach, by Sharon Lee
This chapbook includes two short stories and a novelette set in Sharon Lee’s notable small town contemporary fantasy world of Archers Beach, Maine.

“The Road to Pomona’s” is a rare precursor to the Archers Beach mythos, that examines the dangers of looking too far into fey matters, if you’re only a mundane human.

“The Vestals of Midnight,” takes place in one of the weirder and most dangerous corners of Archers Beach–the Enterprise, where things just “come in.” Only, what’s come in this time are children, and they’re in very great peril from the Enterprise’s ruling intelligence.

Novelette “Wolf in the Wind” serves up one of the Wise Ones who oversee the Six Worlds, and who might not be as impartial as their office demands.

PRAISE FOR SHARON LEE’S CAROUSEL SERIES
“This is how things would be if the fae world actually did impinge on our own world.” — SFRevu

“. . . a virtuoso ride, full of the spirit of the carnival, fully aware of the thinness of the veil between the worlds and expert at managing to twitch it aside just enough to matter.” — Alma A. Hromic

RIBBON DANCE CENTRAL

Ribbon Dance, the 26th novel set in the Liaden Universe® created by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller, is the sequel to 2020’s Trader’s Leap. In it, we follow the Tree-and-Dragon Trade Team headed by Master Trader Shan yos’Galan, ably assisted by new Trader Padi yos’Galan, as they attempt to establish if Colemeno, recently emerged from Rastov’s Dust can be made to anchor an exciting new trade route, while attempting to avoid falling afoul of local custom.

1 Ribbon Dance will be published in hardcover, ebook on June 4 2024. We await news of an audiobook edition.

2 The eARC will be available from Baen.com on March 15

3 Uncle Hugo WILL BE accepting preorders for signed copies of the hardcover in mid-March.

LEE AND MILLER SHORT STORIES UPCOMING

The following upcoming anthologies include stories by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller:
1 Chicks in Tank Tops, edited by Jason Cordova, Baen, February 7 includes Liaden Universe® story “Gadreel’s Folly.”

2 Familiars, edited by Patricia Bray, and Joshua Palmatier, Zombies Need Brains, August, includes “Familiarity.”

3 The Last Train to Kepler-283c, edited by David Boop, Baen, November 5, includes Liaden Universe® story “The Last Train to Clarkesville.”

PLAN B ANNIVERSARY EDITION

Baen is reprinting Plan B, the sequel to Carpe Diem, in a spiffy anniversary paperback in October. The book will include a new afterword from the authors.

DOUBLE VISION COMING SOON

Double Vision is just that – a collection combining our two different visions. In many cases there are two different understandings of story, some written individually and some written together, things that you may not have seen if you’re dyed in the wool Liaden fans but didn’t tread – or were too young for! – the larger market of anthologies and magazines that helped us get our single and joint careers in motion.

If you are a fan of our Liaden stories, or of Archer’s Beach, for that matter, you’ll find some familiar themes, ideas, and character types … if you’re just started reading our work you might consider Double Vision a kind of primer on the question where we and the Liaden Universe came from.

This Pinbeam Books edition of Double Vision replaces the long-out-of-print SRM Publisher edition published 15 years ago – you can consider this a 15th anniversary edition of that 2009 collection if you like. Most of the text of that edition has been retained but some additional editing and reformatting has been performed.

NOTE: The cover of this edition is used by special permission of the artist, Chris McGrath – it was previously used for the Meisha Merlin edition of Low Port, edited by Lee and Miller.

TRADE LANES NEWS

From Steve and Sharon: “Yes, Trade Lanes is much later than we’d like. Steve’s recasting the book since an insidious plot miscue meant two of the core threads actually conflict with established Liaden Universe® canon. Much of the novel is being rebuilt word by word. At this point, we anticipate turning in a finished manuscript in 2025.”

WHAT’S IN THE WORKS

Sharon is lead on the sequel to Ribbon Dance (title TBA), which is due to Baen in September.

PR PROJECT: PULL QUOTES

Baen is asking its authors to provide them with fun pull-quotes from their books, for an upcoming PR push. We are therefore asking you, our readers, to help us out. This is your chance to see your favorite Liaden Universe® quote up in lights.

Go here to read the instructions.

SALVAGE RIGHT AUDIOBOOK UPDATE
Eileen Stevens will be narrating the audiobook edition of the 25th Liaden Universe® novel, Salvage Right. No word yet on the publication date at Audible, but that day is much nearer, now.

SALVAGE RIGHT MASS MARKET
The mass market paperback edition of SALVAGE RIGHT will be published on April 30, 2024, and will be available at your favorite bookstore.

RIBBON DANCE PUBLICATION
The 26th novel set in the Liaden Universe®, RIBBON DANCE will be published in hardcover and ebook editions on June 24, 2024, and will be available from All of the Usual Suspects.

RIBBON DANCE is the direct sequel to 2020’s TRADER’S LEAP, following the continuing efforts of Master Trader Shan yos’Galan to open new and profitable trade routes for Clan Korval.

The blurb: On a world where cake is a necessity, it takes the Grid to protect the civilized and the deaf from the dire influences of the ambient and to keep the chaotic Haosa at bay.

Having arrived at recently Dust-bound Colemeno, Trader Padi yos’Galan is essential to Master Trader Shan yos’Galan’s plan to recoup Korval’s clan fortunes by establishing new routes for the clan’s tradeship. Shan’s inner Healer insists Padi come to terms with her as-yet unplumbed psychic abilities, which might place her in the top tier of dramliz, if she can learn control.

Padi yearns to concentrate on trade, but Colemeno’s fey ambient and deadly long-term politics combine to bring her face-to-face with the Haosa, and in particular with the mysterious and untouchable Tekelia, as Korval’s trade mission’s necessity of a port audit collide with a cruel history of murder, deception, and brutality. Amid the dangers, Padi unexpectedly finds herself eagerly exploring her dramliz side when faced with the unspoken powers of the ambient, the sky-filling energy of the ribbon dance, and Tekelia’s mutable eyes.

Ebook to be released on November 23, 2023. Paper book available on or slightly before that date. The ebook is now available for pre-order at Apple, Amazon, BN, Kobo, among others.

Summary:
From Every Storm
is a chapbook compilation of three Liaden Universe® stories, one of them never before published. The storms of the title spring not so much from the desert or the deep blue sea but from the minds and hearts of humanity, where greed wars with truth and justice, and where sometimes the supposed end of storm is a mere hurricane eye portending greater potential for damage ahead.

First up is “Standing Orders,” a finalist for 2022’s WSFA’s Small Press Award for Short Fiction, originally published in Derelict, a 2021 ZNB anthology. What happens at the end of a war that no one really won, where victory came at the price of acting more like the enemy than the High Command ever should?

Next is the previously unissued “Songs of the Fathers” a story dealing with Shan yos’Galan’s sometime trade partner Lomar Fasholt and her family as they struggle to follow her Mother’s religion as it morphs from loving to acquisitive, from flexible to aggressively rule-bound. Lomar’s a good mother and wife but her self-exiled family’s suffered greatly through this storm of changes. Will they find hope amidst the tumult?

Finally, there’s “From Every Storm a Rainbow,” the 2021 holiday story from Baen.com, wherein Sinit Caylon comes face to face with the perfidy of her absent brother while the accountant’s guild is trying to help Clan Mizel come about after years of of her mother’s abdication of responsibilities to Ran Eld. Sinit thinks the storm must be about over until it become obvious that between them her mother and brother may have fatally endangered the clan’s brightest future.

“Gadreel’s Folly,” lead story in the anthology Chicks in Tank Tops, edited by Jason Cordova, Baen Books, publication date January 3, 2023. “Folly” is Kasagaria Mikelsyn’s origin story. You may preorder Chicks in Tank Tops from your favorite bookstore. Those who indulge may purchase the earc from Baen.com.

Scout’s Progress 20th anniversary mass market reprint, February 28, 2023, featuring a gorgeous new cover by Sam Kennedy and a new foreword by the authors. Available for preorder from your favorite on-line bookstore.

Salvage Right, Lee and Miller’s 25th Liaden Universe® novel, July 4, 2023. Gorgeous cover by David Mattingly. Hardcover available for preorder at your favorite bookstore. There will be an ebook edition available on publication day, but, as we all know by now, not all Baen ebooks are available as preorders.

Regarding signed copies: We have spoken to the Uncle and he is willing to handle orders for signed copies of Salvage Right – HOWEVER, he will NOT be accepting preorders until somewhat closer to the publication date. This information is provided to help you to plan your ordering and budgeting. An InfoDumpling will be dispatched when preordering for signed books opens.

Regarding eARC: We assume that the lack of a ebook preorder button means that there will be an eARC edition available from Baen, 3 or 4 months prior to publication of the hardcover.

Regarding Salvage Right cover art: David Mattingly makes a limited number of prints of his covers available for sale. If you would like a print of the Salvage Right art (which is, honestly, just gorgeous), go here: type “Salvage Right” into the search box, and choose your size from those offered.

About Salvage Right:
With origins in the Old Universe, the malevolent, acquisitive intelligence of Tinsori Light sought to infect others with itself, and send those agents out into the wide new universe to infect even more.

For centuries, two heroes stood between Tinsori Light and the vulnerable universe – Light Keepers Jen Sin yos’Phelium and Lorith of the Sanderat.

Just when it seemed that they – merely human – must fail, Tinsori Light, enfeebled by aged systems, succumbed to the stress of a unique spatial event – and died, leaving the station a shell.

Luckily, the light keepers have back-up. A mismatched team of arcane specialists are on-station, working non-stop to preserve the Light, build trustworthy systems, and open the refurbished station for business.

In fact, ships are already incoming, and it becomes a matter of urgency to sort friend from foe. In particular, the Lyre Institute wishes to acquire Tinsori Light, and will do anything, spend anyone, to achieve that goal.

“The Last Train to Clarkesville,” Last Train Outta Kepplar-283c, edited by David Boop, Baen Books, publication date Winter 2023. We were challenged to write a Liaden Universe® Western.

Fair Trade audiobook. This has been a long time coming, and it ain’t here yet, but! We had a wonderful, lively conference with narrator Eileen Stevens, as she was getting ready to start recording, so we hope that the wait won’t be too much longer.

CONVENTION APPEARANCES

Lee and Miller have applied to be in-person panelists at Boskone 60 (February 17-19, 2023). There is a new process in place this year, and we’ve not yet heard back concerning our applications. More news when we have some.

Lee and Miller will be Writer Guests of Honor at Heliosphere, April 28-30, 2023 in Piscataway NJ. Artist Guest of Honor will be David Mattingly.

CAREER MILESTONES
*As above, Salvage Right is the 25th Liaden Universe® novel.
*It is also Lee and Miller’s
29th collaborative novel, and 100th collaborative work.
*It is Sharon Lee’s 34
th novel.
*And! It brings Lee-and-Miller’s total lifetime collaborative words written to Three million, seven hundred fifty-eight thousand, four hundred and eight.

But we haven’t stopped, there. “The Last Train to Clarkesville” is Lee and Miller’s 102nd collaborative work, and we have more in the pipeline.

Thank you all for sticking with us through 35 years of telling stories!

FAIR TRADE News
FAIR TRADE is the 24th novel set in the Liaden Universe® created and written by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller. It is, in addition, the third book in the so-called “Jethri arc.” Previous volumes were: BALANCE OF TRADE and TRADE SECRET.

For those who indulge the eARC is available from Baen Books ONLY. Here’s the link.

For those who are waiting — patiently! — for the hardcover to be published in May, and would like to have a signed hardcover, you may preorder your book from Uncle Hugo ONLY. Here’s the link.
Please Note: Personalizations are not available this year. The Uncle is just getting his new Real World Store set up, and it’s felt that the additional craziness of trying to keep track of personalized books would only be a recipe for error. Thank you for your understanding.

LIADEN UNIVERSE® CONSTELLATION, VOLUME 5 . . .
. . .is out in trade paper, and available from your favorite bookstore.
Remember, the Constellations collect stories that have already appeared elsewhere into One! Convenient! Package!

Table of Contents: Authors’ Foreword, Fortune’s Favors, Opportunity to Seize, Shout of Honor, Command Decision, Dark Secrets, A Visit to the Galaxy Ballroom, The Gate that Locks the Tree, Preferred Seating, Ambient Conditions, Dead Men Dream

The Series Hugo and the Liaden Universe®
There have been Questions, mostly around the fact that there was no Liaden Universe® novel published in 2021 (ref “fuck cancer”), and therefore how can the series possibly be eligible for the Series Hugo?

We checked with Appropriate Authority, to be certain we weren’t misleading anyone, and here is how the Series Hugo works:

First, in order to nominate works for the Hugo Ballot, you must have been a member of ChiCon8, the 80th World Science Fiction Convention, on or before January 31, 2022 OR you must have been a member of DisCon III, the 79th WorldCon.

Second, if you meet the above stipulation, you have until March 15 to nominate. Only members of ChiCon8 may vote on the final ballot.

Third, specific to the Series Hugo: The Liaden Universe® is already established as eligible for this award. That is, there are already (many more than) 240,000 published words of Liaden Universe® out there in the literary world.

Since we have crossed the eligibility threshold of 240,000 published words in-series, there only needs to be one installment of any length in-series for the Nominating Year — which is 2021.

There were four installments of the Liaden Universe® published in 2021. I will list them at the end of this posting. This is important because, when you enter a series into the nomination form, it asks you for a “2021 Example from Series.” This is where you enter your choice of the four shorter Liaden works that were published in 2021. Those works are:

SHORT STORY
“Standing Orders,” Derelict, Zombies Need Brains, July 2021 (5,775 words)

NOVELETTE
“From Every Storm a Rainbow,” Baen.com (link to free story) December 2021 (7,957 words)

“Our Lady of Benevolence,” Bread Alone: Adventures in the Liaden Universe® Number 34, Pinbeam Books, November 2021 (14,500 words)

NOVELLA
“Dead Men Dream,” Change State: Adventures in the Liaden Universe® Number 32, Pinbeam Books, March 2021 (19,800 words)

As an aside, all of the works listed above are also eligible for Hugo nominations in their own categories.

Everybody good?

Good.

Please do consider nominating the Liaden Universe® as one of your five choices for the Series Hugo. Please mention the Liaden Universe® in whatever Hugo discussions you may be having.

Why is the series worthy of the Series Hugo? Well — it’s a good, solid piece of work, if I do say so. The Liaden Universe® currently includes 23 published novels, and dozens of short stories — closing in on 5 million words. The very first Liaden Universe® novel, Agent of Change, was published in February 1988. The twenty-fourth Liaden Universe® novel, Fair Trade, will be published in May 2022. The series is qualified — perhaps overqualified — for the Series Hugo.

Who’s Writing What for When?
Lee and Miller are under contract to Baen Books for three Liaden Universe® novels after FAIR TRADE, which will be published in May. Those novels are:

1 TRADE LANES, the sequel to Fair Trade — Steve Miller, Lead Writer

2 SALVAGE RIGHT — Sharon Lee, Lead Writer

3 A Liaden Novel to be Named Later — Sharon Lee, Lead Writer probably? At the moment, this is looking like a return to the Redlands and checking in with Padi, Tekelia, Aunt Astra, Eet, and the gang. This could change, as all things may change, and only reflect our thoughts at the moment.

For those who have been playing along at home for a long time, the above three novels complete the Triple Threat contract with Baen.

We do not at the moment have any short works under contract, but that, too, could change.

BOSKONE 59 Schedule
Steve Miller will be a virtual panelist at Boskone 59, February 18-20. Boskone is a Hybrid Convention this year.

Steve’s schedule is below. All times are Eastern Standard.

VIRTUAL: Unhappy Endings Format: Panel
18 Feb 2022, Friday 8pm – 8:50pm, Marina IV (Westin)
Jane Yolen, Steve Miller, Julie Czerneda, Paul Di Filippo (M), Ada Palmer

Tragic plays from Shakespeare, Sophocles, Aeschylus, and Euripides are still with us … hundreds, even thousands of years later. Not all stories let the protagonist triumph — sometimes they lose; sometimes they even die losing. Some science fiction and fantasy writers’ unhappily ending stories are quite popular. Why do they succeed? Why do other such stories fail — even fail so hard their authors never try to write unhappily ever after?

VIRTUAL: My Favorite Character
18 Feb 2022, Friday 9pm – 9:50pm, Marina IV (Westin)
Olav Rokne, Jen Gunnels, Steve Miller, David Marshall, James Moore (M)

Google once estimated that humanity had published 129,864,880 books. If about half were SF/F/H trilogies — never mind, let’s ask it this way: from all the speculative fiction stories ever published, who’s your favorite character, and why? Heroine, villain, sidekick, romantic interest, alien bystander? Would you like to meet, have dinner with, or be that person? What does your choice say about your own character?

VIRTUAL: Solo Reading
19 Feb 2022, Saturday 12:30 – 12:55, Marina IV (Westin)
Steve Miller

Watch the skies and then watch us!
Lee and Miller have a Zoom event coming up later this month — chatting with Griffin Barber about Liaden Universe® Constellation, Volume 5. See or listen to this podcast here.

Where in the World are Lee and Miller?
Lee and Miller are members of ChiCon8. We hope to attend, but we are keeping a weather eye out.
