Blog Without A Name

The glamor!

It rained like a sonofagun all day.  No.  It POURED much of the day, with intermittent moments of mere rain.

Out of the downpour, then, at a Very Early Hour, came the painters.  They painted.  One of the things they painted was the ceiling and wall along the descent to the basement.  For this, since the basement stairs ceiling is a jillion feet high, a scaffolding was erected, including a plank for the painter to stand on while he painted the walls.

Socks, being the safety conscious supervisor that he is, immediately took it upon himself to walk the plank out to the far end, thus proving that it would adequately support a Really Big Guy.  He then marched back down the plank to the hallway, gave the painter, who had been properly waiting the end of inspection, a nice, ’round both ankles hug, and work went forth.

Meanwhile, in the bathroom, the boss was ripping the hell out of the wallpaper.  Sigh.  I’ve hated that wallpaper for years.

Into all this busyness came the electrician, who inspected the (relatively minor) problem of having to move an outlet in the bathroom, and the (rather more complex) problem of the crossed wiring in the bedroom.  He intends to return tomorrow, or perhaps Monday, to do what he does best.

Over on Facebook Lauretta posted this link, which I think is pertinent to the repair situation as it unfolds.

The Claims Officer called to let us know that a check has been sent to the Remediation Guy, covering his costs in full.  Another, very much smaller check, will be in the mail to us tomorrow.

Late in the day, the auction went over, and the Green Folder is as I type packed up and ready to embark on the journey to its new home, tomorrow.

The inventorying continues.  Found a whole stack of soggy cardboard boxes today.  And this is after things are dry.

So, the glamor.

Regarding the writing life and the recurring topic of why writers drink…I had meant to point to this a couple days ago, but for some reason, I forgot.

Here, read.  I’ll wait.

Back?  Was that a good read, or what?

Now, what this is, is that Hachette Publishing is demanding that its authors accept DRM on their ebooks.  What a surprise, right?  But the wrinkle here is?  They’re also demanding that Hachette authors demand that any other publisher those authors may publish with ALSO DRM those authors’ books.

Which is crazy.  I mean, first of all, what publisher listens to authors in matters of line, sales, and marketing?  Clearly Hachette doesn’t, or they’d’ve dumped DRM some time back.  And?  Who died and left Hachette Emperor of the Publishing Universe?  They’re going to force other publishers (by which, in this instance, Hachette chiefly means “Tor”) to abide by Hachette’s demands — how, exactly?

But!  Hachette doesn’t care.  Their threat is to its authors:  Make this so, or suffer the consequences.  I have spoken; go.

I really don’t know what I’d do if I was a Hachette author.  Besides, yanno, lay in a whole lot of wine.  Direct my agent to pull my Hachette titles?  Direct my agent to pull my titles with That Other Publisher?  Go back to college and take a degree in accounting?

Wouldn’t it be lovely to sit in a comfortable room, with a cat or two to hand, and a window looking out onto a scene you find inspiring, and just. . .write books, leaving the world and all it’s craziness on the far side of the door?

Yeah, that’s gonna happen.

G’night.

Five Things Make a Post

1.  Free Reading!  “Landed Alien,” a Liaden Universe® short story, is now up and waiting for you to read it, right here (scroll down to get to the story).

2.  The ebook edition of Dragon Ship is now available for purchase from Baen Ebooks.  This edition does fix the continuity errors which were present in the eArc and is, to the best of my knowledge, the exact words, in the exact order that they appear in the hardcover edition.

3.  The authors’ working notes for Mouse and Dragon are still on auction for the next 23-ish hours.  Current bid is $198.75 $202.50  Will it break $200 $225?  The uncertainty!  The drama!  The pretty green folder — here, take a look.

4.  The inventory of Things Ruined In the Flood, including books that are still wet, continues.  I am a Virgo, and therefore have a high tolerance for fiddly little details, but, yanno?  Enough is enough, already.

5.  In related news, the painter just phoned to say that she’s starting work tomorrow at 8:30 a.m.  The electrician is due at 9:30.  Socks is gonna have some Serious Supervising to do.

Dammit, Harry; I still owe you a drink…

Word on the internet is that Harry Harrison has died.

I adored Harry for a multitude of reasons — he was kind, he was funny, he was acerbic; he  created Slippery Jim and Angelina, and Bill, the most inept hero in space opera, and gave us a vividly frightening look at what it would be like when there were just too many of us.

The last time I talked to him at length was…in Montreal?  Really?  I guess it was.  He joined us for breakfast, carrying his cup over from his table to ours, and sitting himself down to chat about nothing much, really.

Harry had charm; people wanted to look out for him.  The staff at the restaurant was no different.  They knew him by name, as he knew their names, and they kept a subtle eye on him.  We went from two foreigners at a corner table, to Mr. Harrison’s friends; he introduced us, so we knew their names, too.

That drink…I incurred that debt at the Philadelphia Nebulas.  It was a good debt, as so few are, a kind of promise that I’d be talkng with Harry again, not once, but many times more.

Damn.

At the corner of KMD & Cool, and other stories from Maine

So, this morning I had some t-shirts to mail and some groceries to pick up. The business at the post office was uneventful, but as I was driving cross-town, I needed to stop at a red light on Kennedy Memorial Drive (locally KMD).  I was in the left lane, since I was going to be turning in at the shopping center half a block up the hill.

Except, while I was sitting there, patiently waiting for the light to go green, Binjali the Subaru gave a. . .shudder. . .

. . .and turned itself off.

Nor could I turn it back on.

Now, KMD at Cool is probably The Busiest Intersection in the Greater Waterville Megaplex.  There were lots of cars behind me, and more coming up the road.

I hit the hazard lights, grabbed my cell, got out of the car, waved people around and simultaneously called AAA.  After I explained what had happened, the customer service person asked me to please move the car over to the side of the road.  I told her that the car had stopped running and wouldn’t start again, or else we wouldn’t be having this conversation.  She said the tow truck would arrive in 50 minutes. I asked her to put a rush on it, and the arrival time went down to 25 minutes.  I told her I’d wait.

Followed the most frightening 15 minutes of my life.  People drive up KMD like it’s a speedway, anyhow, but it’s Utterly Amazing how many of them will drive up on a car that is sitting absolutely still at, like, 60 miles an hour until, at the Very Last Possible Second, they slam on their brakes.

Or — even scarier — whip the car into the right hand lane, without even looking to see is there a freaking tractor trailer already in the space they mean to occupy.

I honestly thought I was going to see dozens die in a multi-vehicle wreck.

I also honestly thought that, given the nature of the intersection, I would shortly be seeing a cop, who could help me with traffic — or actually, who could DO the traffic, because nobody was paying attention to me.

No cop ever materialized.  The Goddess did, however, send me Tom, a volunteer fireman from Vassalboro, who swung his truck in behind mine at an angle, got out and said, “I’ll just stay here with you ’til your tow comes, if that’s all right?”

I allowed as how it was all right.

For some reason, people who couldn’t see the little green Subaru had No Trouble At All seeing the Big Black Truck.

Just about the time Tom pulled in behind me, an SUV pulled up beside and the tatooed, pierced and henna’d woman behind the wheel asked if I had a flat.  I told her that I thought the battery’d quit.

“We can give ‘er a hot shot,” the fellow I assumed was her  boyfriend/ husband said from the passenger’s seat.  “Get ‘er off to the side of the road, ‘fore you get killed.”

They pulled in ahead of me, and produced a portable battery with cables.  Tom and the boyfriend got the hood up, and the driver valiantly tried to make a connection with the badly corroded terminals.

No go.

I thanked them, they wished me luck, and drove off.  Tom and I chatted until the tow truck arrived, cranked Binjali onto the bed and off we went to Harry Smith’s.

There, the mechanic said, “Well, let’s see if we can find out what the problem is.”

I offered my opinion that the problem was probably the battery, which was wicked corroded.

He kind of nodded, not really listening, brought the hood up, and stood for a longish minute, looking down.

“Well,” he said, “that’s kinda your definition of wicked corroded, right there.”

I explained that I’d been waiting to get a new battery until I got paid, and he nodded again.

“Looks like it’s payday then, don’t it?”

Guess so.

So, bottom line — new battery, new alternator, four hunnert bucks on the credit card, and everything’s good to go.

Steve arrived while the new battery was still charging, and we did the grocery shopping, then came home in time to meet with the plumber and work out with him what needed to be done to various feed lines and plumbing.  One of the revelations being that Waterville Custom Kitchens could probably “do us” a  vanity and new countertop for the space we have, which is, of course, a non-standard size.

So! After the plumber left us, Steve and I went back to Waterville, consulted with Tim at WCK and got that set up.  The bad news there is that it will take about 10 days to get the vanity built.

Across town we went, to the plumber’s facility, where we picked out a faucet set and a new toilet, and confirmed that yes, the crew could and would pick up the vanity from WCK when it was done and bring it out to our house with them.

That done, we picked up my car from Mr. Smith, and came home.

I am now Officially Exhausted, the day is shot, and I would like the bathroom to repair itself, please.

Yeah, that’s gonna happen.

*deep breath*

In other news, the auction for the notes from which Mouse and Dragon sprang is on for a scant two days and twenty-one hours.  Current bid is $157.50 for these priceless pieces of paper.  If you ever wondered what goes on inside a writer’s head when she’s in the midst of creation, this is your chance to find out!  Here’s that link again.

Also!  All of the “extra” Carousel Tides t-shirts have found homes.  Thank you all!

Saturday Ketchup

First, thank you for the lemon meringue pie soap; it’s lovely!  I’d be more specific, but there wasn’t a name included.  Also — Mary, thank you for the rosemary mint, and verbena soap; I’m sorry I don’t know which Mary. . .

T-shirt update!  I have these quantities and sizes left:
1-Small
1- Medium
1 – Large
2-XL
2-2X
1-5X

And, auction update!
Over here the green Pendaflex folder containing all of the working notes for Mouse and Dragon, many of them handwritten, is on auction and will remain on for the next 4 days, 22 hours, going over on Thursday August 16,at 14:26:35 PDT. This is, allow me to repeat, a one-of-a-kind item. We never write books this way. If you want to see what goes on in our heads — or at least, what goes on in my head — when we’re writing, this is going to be about your only opportunity to do so. Steve and I will sign the Pendaflex folder, if the winning bidder so desires. How’s that for an inducement?

In other news, I spent too much time today running errands, and now I need to do some work. Oh! Almost forgot something very important. Sunbear will be accompanying me to the ocean. Sunbear is from Old Orchard Beach. She has her name from the fact that her paws change color to show how much sun she’s had. I’m sure she’ll be happy to be back in the old ‘hood for a visit.

Archers Beach T-shirts, Reprise

Were you one of the folks who wanted an Archers Beach t-shirt, but the cash-flow wasn’t cooperating?

Or!  Having received your t-shirt, are you regretting not having purchased a second?

If so, I can help you.

Going by the radio silence, everyone who ordered t-shirts received theirs, so there’s no need for me to hold onto the “if something gets lost in the mail” shirts any longer.

EDITED: I have the following quantities and sizes:
1-SM
1-M
4-L
1-XL
3-2XL
1-3XL
2-4XL
1-5XL

If you are interested in obtaining one of these really beautiful (and useful!) t-shirts, please drop me a note at rolanniATkorvalDOTcom.

Thanks!

In which insanity takes EZ-Pass

In order of Excitement:

1.  The Green Folder, including all of the working notes for Liaden Universe® novel Mouse and Dragon is up for auction at eBay, current bid is $137.50 $152.50.  This is a one-of-a-kind item.  Go take a look — you know you want to…

2.  The insurance adjustor has been here; his report is due in the central claims office sometime around the middle of next week, after which the Claims Supervisor will call me and let us know what we’re looking at in terms of damages, and compensation for same.  Also?  He left his tape measure — really nice tape measure — which I’ll be putting into the mail to him tomorrow.

3.  The painter was here this morning, and has delivered herself of a quote.  She can do the job, she thinks, at the end of next week.

4.  The floor guy came out and measured; we picked out the new floor and he gave us a quote.  Sadly, he cannot schedule work, because what he does depends on the plumber, who. . .

5.  Will be sending somebody out to Survey the Situation on Monday morning.

6. I think I may be running on the bleeding stubs of my nerves at this point.  I’ve been doodling around at mindless stuff — making piles of stuff to take with me to Archers Beach next month (in three! weeks!).  I called my landlord and found out what my snail address will be, since it looks like it’s going to be necessary to receive mail there.

7.  In the Midst of Everything, yesterday brought the UPS guy, who brought a big box of Ghost Ship mmps. What a pretty book!

8.  In about 40 minutes, I’ll call Studio C and finish my interrupted interview with Andy Caploe.  Neil (who is, indeed, Neil) says he’ll be able to patch the two parts together, and no one will ever know that there was a week-long break.  Hmmm…  Contest? Spot the patch and win — I wonder what we can give away?  Not an audiobook, I suspect, and not a coon cat. . .

Will have to think.  In the meantime, I need to decide which stuffy to take with me to the ocean.

Now, a Nature Note: Water is Wet
As some of you know, Sharon and Steve entertained a flood in their house on August 3; a feed line in the bathroom burst, filling the bathroom and the basement with plenty too much water.

What we want to say about that is? We’re fine. Yes, we were bummed that our plan to put all the good stuff on pallets overlooked the fact that water falls DOWN, too, but we got over that. We have homeowner’s insurance; it covers the cost of drying out everything that can be dried out. Yes, we have a deductible; yes, we lost some stuff; yes, sorting through is exhausting, but mostly what it is at this point? Is a headache. We really didn’t need this right now — We’re sure all of you know what we’re talking about, here. We’re doing the stuff that you do in the aftermath of your house flooding — coping with the adjustor, the flooring guy, and the plumber, and, hey, while we’re at it, the painter and the carpenter. It’s a mess, but — again, and truly: We’re fine.

Nobody needs to send us books, or big chunks of money, or computers, or — anything, really. It’s sweet that you care. If you feel you want to help in some way, well…the cats took some tragic losses — several favorite scratching posts were unrecoverable, as were some highly regarded blankets and cushions, and an extremely well-loved catnip mouse, and some cat-place towels, too. If you want to assist with things like that, OK, we appreciate the offers, and since the insurance payout will take a few days to make it through channels, we’ll accept small donations to srmATkorvalDOTcom — please no more than $10 or $12 per individual! We’ll make sure the cats are outfitted well, and we will tell them the name of their benefactor! Don’t expect a thank you note from them; they’re cats. Any overflow will go to the Waterville Homeless Shelter, which is our charity-of-choice.

Thank you all for your concern and care!

Social Justice

Had I known that this important piece of business would be taken up at the Chicago WorldCon, I would have done my utmost to attend.  Since I cannot attend, I urge all of you who are attending to please go to the Business Meeting and support the following resolution.

Yngvi is not a louse.

Thank you.

In other news, I am completely exhausted, and going to go fall on my face, now.

Tomorrow, the Green Folder will hit eBay.  Watch the skies.

Or eBay.

…that’s probably the better choice.

Yes, going now…

…no, really.

…right now…
