Archers Beach Pull-Quotes Needed

OK!  Folks have been working the Liaden Universe® pull-quote fields, now it’s time to up the ante!

I need your favorite pull-quotes from the Archers Beach Trilogy by Sharon Lee — that is Carousel Tides, Carousel Sun, Carousel Seas.  This is to assist Baen in a new PR project.

A pull-quote looks like this.  Please follow the form.  We do need the title, and the speaker.

Dammit, Marilyn!” I overrode her. “We’re already pulling a rabbit out of a hat here, and now you’ve got the goddamn nerve to ask for a kangaroo?” — Kate Archer, Carousel Tides

Post as many as you like.  Remember!  Short and snappy is the key!

  1. Archers Beach Pull quotes- Frankly, Sharon, identifying pull quotes for Archer’s Beach were MUCH more difficult for me than for the Liaden books. I believe it was that you were writing lovely atmospheric fantasy, rather than bluff space opera action. And I noticed the sentences tended to be “paired” with one setting up the second and inseparable from it. I don’t own the remaining books yet or I would tackle them immediately and hope for my eye to see better pulls. OTOH, I enjoyed the re-read and offer to cheerfully purchase an additional book in the series if you let me know which one is likely to benefit most from pull-quote mining. – Best wishes, Bob Shelley

Anything’s possible, with ocean air in your lungs. City air’s all weighted down with car exhaust, diesel fumes, and feelings of hopelessness. – Kate Fae Archer, Archer’s Beach

I heard his feet moving over dry grass and whispered a request to the trees. Shadows loomed, sudden, menacing, and cold, and I heard the sound of footsteps again, retreating. – Kate Fae Archer, Archer’s Beach

…you don’t want to ward a public amusement. Most people aren’t sensitive enough to notice the bindings, or that some of animals are a little . . . strange. Still, it’s a risky enterprise, with the potential for being Extremely Unhealthy for the average man on the midway. – Kate Fae Archer, Archer’s Beach

It must’ve been beyond creepy, the hoarse little-girl voice reciting the atrocities of another time and place. – Kate Fae Archer, Archer’s Beach

The more power a mage acquires, the more dangerous it—and they—are. It’s unfortunately not uncommon to learn that a particularly ambitious mage’s power has eaten him. – Kate Fae Archer, Archer’s Beach

Outside, the sea rolled, pastel pink beneath the setting sun, keeping its counsel close.– Kate Fae Archer, Archer’s Beach

You have to be sensitive to . . . magic . . . to feel the pale, hot colors coming off the Rock like they do, and hear the way the sea sizzles and boils around it. You don’t have to be anything but human, though, to see the pockets and the edges along that jagged surface phosphorescing in the dark, and know deep in your gut that it’s no good place to be. – Kate Fae Archer, Archer’s Beach

I caught glimpses and glimmers out the sides of my eyes, enough to notice that the fell-fire over the Rock brightened as we approached, and to see how the outgoing waves struck the surface hard, unlike any other place on the beach. Beside me, Borgan shook himself, and looked over to it. Archers Beach Pull quotes- Frankly Sharon, pull quotes for Archer’s Beach were MUCH more difficult than Liaden books. The Wise aren’t summoned lightly, and certainly not before every single duck is bathed, combed, brushed and standing at full attention. – Kate Fae Archer, Archer’s Beach

I didn’t notice anything amiss until a slim figure danced out of the lee side of the ticket booth, and slammed me into the Plexiglas wall, knife slashing toward my face. – Kate Fae Archer, Archer’s Beach

The unicorn whirled, supernaturally fast, leading with its horn. I got the knife up, engaged, turning the horn like an opponent’s sword, and followed through in a pretty damn good riposte, slashing the tender nose. The unicorn screamed… – Kate Fae Archer, Archer’s Beach

I was seized with a longing so intense, it near melted my bones, and in my mind’s eye I saw Heath Hill with aching clarity. Wind tousled my hair, and I heard the high clatter of merrybells, beneath them, a frail, tuneless singing, “Who’ll fetch me home to the hills so green . . .” – Kate Fae Archer, Archer’s Beach

She was tall and thin, with flyaway blond hair and narrow brown eyes, wearing blue jeans and a long-sleeved denim shirt—absolutely unmemorable, except for one thing. She was pointing a gun at my chest. – Kate Fae Archer, Archer’s Beach

“I’ve come,” I said to the trees, “as Guardian of the land and granddaughter of the Lady. Tell me what I can do to help you, and to mend what may be mended.” – Kate Fae Archer, Archer’s Beach

For the second time in slightly less than a day, I raised power in order to manipulate a Major Working. The seal on Googin Rock had been complex and tricksy. Damned impressive, too—for the naive work of unlettered savages. – Kate Fae Archer, Archer’s Beach

My hands glowed faintly blue in the illumination of the safety lights, and sparks dripped from my fingertips, snapping when they met the sea air. No doubt I had the power. – Kate Fae Archer, Archer’s Beach

“One comes behind me. He would see you strangled, the marsh filled and the small lives slain.” – Kate Fae Archer, Archer’s Beach

  2. Bob, thank you so much for doing this, and for pointing out that different styles of books may not be best served by this new notion of Baen’s. I’ll pass your comments on for them to think about.
