The List Thus Far

As of Right Now, this is the list for requested pronunciations. I admit to being a little baffled by some of the requests. I mean, honestly, folks — there are thousands of people named Priscilla and Inas living in the world today, hundreds named Miri, and Theo isn’t exactly unknown. Delacroix y Mendoza? Real-world, right-now names, possibly rare in combination, but I’m not willing to bet on that. And Waitley is a proud tribe.

Beyond that, I believe that a few of the words requested are misspelled. I may be wrong, but I’d appreciate a recheck and a cite. I’ve marked the questionable entries with a line of ?s.

  1. Onangrata is not on the list?

I think that folks are looking more for you to provide the emPHAsis on the right syLABel. I know that that is what I want.

    Thanks for doing this!!

BTW; I hate you guys for creating the Splinter Universe. Now there is ANOTHER web site that I have to look at. BUT the rewards of reading about my Liaden friends are a nice trade-off.
    I heart you!!
    Your loyal minion,
    Bridget

  2. Kilon pel’Meret is the woman who was taking her young son for some exercise in the park when Higdon’s Howlers and Val Con’s team arrived there on page 432 of “I Dare” MM edition ISBN 1-892065-03-7. Very much a minor character, but another item of data to help understand the pattern of emphasis.

I do agree with the person who said it’s largely a matter of emphasis; remember how Nova reacted to Liz Lizardi’s pronunciation of Miri’s mother’s name…

Heaven knows, I’d used the word “hyperbole” verbally for probably a decade before I ever saw it written down, and at first I mistook it for “hyper-bole”, a tree with a glandular problem of the trunk. See? 😉

  3. Just ran across Lina Faaldom’s exclamation of horror at Priscilla’s announcement that Shan meant to introduce her to Aunt Kareen, Conflict of Honors, page 141; “Illanga kilachi!”
    Please add that.

  4. I was hoping for definitions as my paperbacks aren’t handy. 🙁 Also I’d love to see the tale of Pat Rin’s early life. Why did he have nightmares? Whatever did Kareen do to him? Thanks again for such a lovely, complete world to escape into!!
