Rain, rain, and, for a change, rain. One source claims five inches of liquid fell from the sky since last night. I can believe that.
The coon cats early took up a position in the bed, and have been holding steady most of the afternoon. I’ve been working on a short story, in between bits of bookkeeping and non-writing trivia. I really ought to do the dishes, but they may have to wait until tomorrow.
Take that, dishes!
Tomorrow, the weatherbeans promise more rain — actually, the weatherbeans are calling five days of rain. Apparently there’s a Weather System hanging over the Great Lakes, just a-spinning up water and spitting out rain, and it doesn’t plan on leaving any time soon.
Tomorrow being Monday, I have phone calls to make. At the top of the list is a call to the doctor’s office. My left shoulder and back have just about froze solid, and nothing I know to do, and have done, since we’ve got home from Kansas City has helped. I see physical therapy in my very near future, dammit.
The other pressing call is to Himself, to schedule a time when I can visit the shop, stick in hand, and talk t-shirts: sizes, color, cost, and the inevitable etcetera. As soon as we have those corners nailed down, I’ll report back.
Oh! We used one of the new pans today to reheat the spaghetti we had for dinner earlier in the week, and it was a dream. No stick, indeed! Also? Leftover mushroom and meatball spaghetti for the win!
No, I’m not sure how we cope with the unending scintillation that is the life of a working artist, either.
So, what did y’all do this weekend? Raining where you are?

Rain? The gods should be so kind. Here in the high mountain desert of New Mexico, we’ve had one rain shower in the last seven months.
When will the alien story be released, and in what form? I use a Nook tablet.
FWIW, I have been a fan of your writing since Agent of Change around 1984. I’ve converted my dad as well. Anyone who is owned and managed by felines can’t be all bad. *g*
Cheers.
Unless something Goes Terribly Wrong, “Landed Alien” will be given away for free during the month of August, on the front page of the Baen website — http://www.baen.com.
Hello Sharon,
I have lived in Maine since 1987 (when I came to attend Unity College) and have just returned after a 3 year absense. I am contrary enough to appreciate and enjoy rain. I actually missed the mist… Certainly we should be thankful not to be in the drought that was predicted earlier this year. Well rain also allows one to hibernate with a good book with less of a sense of guilt for ignoring the world at large.
I have to thank you and Steve for creating and continuing the Liadan Universe. I haven’t been so captivated by the characters and concepts of an alternate reality since Marion Zimmer Bradley’s “Darkover” world. I found your book; “Conflict of Honors” at a used book store many years ago and held onto it hoping to come across more of the books. Just discovered this past month a number of your early books at a public library and now am completely hooked! I want to read everything you have, but can’t afford to buy them new. How can I get used copies and still support your writing? I find I want hard copies so I can sit outside and read…
Last comment: I too am a cat lover. My dear friend “Whisper” (a Maine Coon) had 16 years before he was taken by cancer. Hoping to find connection to another Coon Cat to join our household soon, but must be a kitten due to the territorial dominance of our female cat “Mystery”.
Welcome home, deah.
I don’t usually mind rain, myself, but I prefer it to be spaced out some. Three days and eight-to-ten inches strikes me as excessive.
Thank you for your kind words about our writing.
I’m not sure I can guide you to used copies of our books; they don’t show up much in used bookstores, for some reason. You might write to Uncle Hugo’s bookstore and ask what they have. They ship everywhere.
Baen did just publish the Entire Backlist in four massive omnibus volumes, at very reasonable prices, when you consider that you’re getting two or three novels for $12 or $13. Cheapest by far are the ebooks, available from Baen, but you said hardcopy…
You may also want to take a look at Splinter Universe, where we post short stories, “splinters,” and outtakes. The bits are free for anyone to read, though there is a Paypal button for those who feel moved to donate to the site, or the stories.
