As it happens, I just yesterday finished listening to that Cotillion audio book. I wonder how you found the read?
Parts of it were too fast for me, but on the whole, I thought it was a good performance, with excellent character separation and good “Irish”.
It was a shame about the word “quadrille”, especially since it cropped up multiple times. With a company like Penguin, you’d expect a decent director, or post-recording checks, but some things still seem to fall through the cracks. At least he didn’t pronounce “marquis” like “marquee”!
I had a good time with it. As someone whose speech and pronunciation is rife with error, I have no complaint of the narrator, and honestly, I have no idea how “quadrille” is “correctly” pronounced. I got a little impatient with what I felt was an over-emphasis on the stammering of Freddie’s friend, Jasper. A little stammer goes a long way. I thought Kitty’s cousin the Marquis perfectly captured. As for being too fast — I must by this point have Cotillion by heart, and am quite Freddy’s slave.
Just as a general observation, being new to audiobooks as I am, I find I like the female narrators’ rendition of male voices more pleasing than I find male narrators’ rendition of female voices.
Definitely agree on poor Jasper. I was profoundly grateful his appearance was brief. I find I hear male voices better than female ones, so that often determines the choice.
